How to Measure Side-Mount Drawer Slides Before Ordering
Before ordering a replacement or new side-mount slide, record the closed rail length, usable cabinet depth, drawer-box width, side gaps and mounting pattern. A nominal inch label alone cannot confirm fit.
1. Identify the slide and its mounting position
Photograph the slide on the drawer and cabinet before removing it. Note whether it is mounted on the side or beneath the drawer, and whether it has a release lever, lock or damping mechanism. This checklist is for side-mounted slides. Undermount and concealed systems require their own drawer-construction and fixing instructions.
For a replacement, include a photograph of the complete pair, any stamped model code and the current fixing holes. A close-looking rail may still have a different hole pattern or clearance requirement.
2. Measure the closed rail and available depth separately
With the slide fully closed, record the overall rail-body length in millimetres. Record any protruding release handle or bracket separately. Then measure the usable cabinet depth along the intended mounting line, accounting for the back panel, door hinges, cables and other obstructions. Record the drawer-box depth as a separate measurement.
Keep the supplier’s nominal size and the measured dimension in separate fields. For example, the DESLA locking-slide card below labels one option as 10 in and gives its length as 25 cm. Those are the supplier’s selection labels; they are not an exact unit-conversion statement. Ask for the final drawing when fit depends on a few millimetres.
3. Check the available space on both sides
Measure the cabinet’s internal width at the mounting line and the drawer-box external width. Check the left and right gaps independently at the front and rear. If the drawer is centred and the sides are parallel, half of the difference between those widths estimates the nominal space per side. Unequal gaps or non-parallel panels must be addressed before selecting a slide.
Compare the measured gaps with the selected slide’s installation requirement. Do not apply one model’s side clearance to another. The referenced DESLA 53 mm locking-slide cards specify 19 mm ± 0.5 mm per side; this figure applies to that source specification, not to every drawer slide.
Accuride’s side-space guidance also explains that the required gap varies by slide and should be checked against its data sheet. Use the selected DESLA supplier drawing for DESLA dimensions.
4. Record travel, hole positions and release access
Closed length and extension travel are different measurements. State how far the drawer needs to open and whether you need locking when closed, when fully extended, or in both positions. Confirm that the installed release handle remains accessible.
For replacement work, measure fixing-hole centres from a consistent reference edge and supply a dimensioned sketch. Do not drill or order production quantities solely from a photograph. Confirm the matching drawing and evaluate a sample in the actual cabinet.
5. Send a measurement worksheet with the RFQ
| Field | What to send |
|---|---|
| Selected product and SKU | Product link, nominal size and the specific option code |
| Closed rail / drawer / cabinet depth | Three separate measurements in mm; note any obstructions |
| Width and side gaps | Cabinet internal width, drawer external width, left/right gaps at front and rear |
| Movement and mounting | Required travel, lock positions, installation orientation and hole sketch |
| Working conditions | Loaded drawer weight, application, expected use and environment |
| Commercial requirements | Quantity per SKU, pair/piece unit, sample request, packing, destination and delivery date |
A length match does not establish load capacity. Request the applicable load rating and test conditions for the final size and installation. MOQ, carton packing, production time and freight are confirmed in the quotation.
