Coat Hook Buying Guide: Fixing, Load & RFQ Checklist

Wall hooks, coat hooks, adhesive utility hooks and clamp-on desk hooks use different fixing methods and load paths. Match the hook to the substrate and intended item.

Short answer: define the item to be hung and expected load, then confirm wall/desk substrate, screw/adhesive/clamp fixing, hook projection, spacing, edge shape, material, finish, quantity and packaging.

1. Choose the fixing family

Hook type Fixing What to confirm
Screw-mounted wall or coat hook Screws into wall, panel, rail or furniture Base size, hole pattern, projection, substrate and suitable anchors
Self-adhesive hook Pressure-sensitive adhesive on a prepared surface Bonding area, surface finish, temperature/moisture, curing time and load direction
Clamp-on desk/bag hook Clamp grips a desk, shelf or panel edge Clamping range, pad/contact material, edge profile and tightening method
Multi-hook rail Several hooks share one mounting plate or rail Overall length, hook spacing, mounting points and combined load distribution

2. Describe the item and load direction

State whether the hook carries coats, bags, towels, tools or decorative items, plus the expected working load per hook. A bag can impose a different outward force from a garment hanging close to the wall. For multi-hook products, describe simultaneous use rather than multiplying a single-hook label.

3. Match the mounting substrate

Identify concrete, masonry, timber stud, plywood, particleboard, hollow wall, glass, tile, painted metal or another surface. The installer should select screws/anchors for the actual substrate. For adhesive products, request preparation and curing instructions; textured, dusty, wet or low-surface-energy materials may not be suitable.

4. Check projection, spacing and safety

Measure hook projection, opening, base size and clearance from doors or walkways. Confirm spacing for garments and bags. For schools, children’s rooms, accessible routes or tight corridors, consider rounded edges, mounting height and the risk of protruding hardware.

5. Finish and corrosion exposure

Separate decorative colour from material and corrosion requirement. State bathroom, kitchen, outdoor or coastal exposure where relevant. Confirm the material/finish of the visible hook, base, moving parts, clamp screw and included fixings.
